Elephant Experience, South Africa...Aug. 1-6, 2012

These are photos of the "elephant-experience" we were treated to after our three days of training in Johannesburg.

The trainer is showing us how a flimsey little strap actually  keeps the elephant from moving his one foot from this spot.  It is connected to a small stick that is stuck into the dirt.  He thinks he is incapable of pulling out the stick, because they train them when they are babies with a huge steel peg, which they really can't pull out, and they just grow up still thinking the strap is stronger than they are.....good thing, because we were very close!!

Playing  ball.....

An elephant will suffocate if he sits down, however he can lie down.  They had us feel it's skin on his back, as well as feel how thick it's ears were.

Ron...the champion!!

It was quite an experience being this close to these great animals. The ground was un-even, rough and rocky........

......which resulted in me twising my foot, tearing a tendon, and then spending three days on the couch, with ice, an ace-bandage and a pillow for elevation.  Lucky me...the olympics were on..plus got caught up on my reading!  It did the trick however....I am completely healed...no more hurting....Thanks to "Dr. Worthen", a Sr. missionary and retired podiatrist serving in Dar Es Saalam, and Sis. Broadbent, a nurse. They diagnosed the problem after I got back to Nairobi and I couldn't walk.  Sis. B did the tests on my foot while Elder Worthen told her over the phone what to push and pull.  Cool!...I didn't even have to make a Dr.s appointment!
